The Willow Story

Willow has been used for generations to make furniture. In the early days, willow furniture was primary to many people who could not afford any other type of furniture. So the story goes--the makers of willow furniture were people who simply traveled about the country and when they came to areas where willow was in abundance, they would build willow furniture and sell to the local residents.

Our willow has been grown and harvested from the banks of rivers, creeks, lakes, and swamps of east Texas. Also natural to this area are alligators, snakes, Texas size mosquitoes, wasps and yellow jackets!

According to the State of Texas, willow is classified as a weed and can be freely harvested if you don't mind spending your day in the hot boiling sun and working around the friendly creatures. Harvesting is primarily done by either wading into the willow patches or reaching the willow by boat. The willow is cut by hand using a sharp knife.

The maker of our willow furniture portrays the harvesting of willow as being a job for the strong. He says that the willow is handled approximately eight times from the initial cut to the final preparation before they even start to build the first piece of furniture.

While there are probably many more stories to be told about willow, we want to invite you to see for yourself the magnificent beauty of willow as crafted by a master craftsman. Please enjoy your tour of our willow showroom and let us hear from you - we welcome your comments.
